PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2016 4:19 am    Post subject: artist seeks writers

I'm a 'lifelong' artist (award-winning), seeking writers (preferably at least age of average comics fan--last I read was 35+--or at least graduated high school) to work with on sequential-art/comics/cartoons; I don't want to do writing myself (though I can). I like realism and realistic inked/etc. art (especially 1980s & 1990s styles, when I started reading and collecting comics).

I don't want to work with 'Karmists', Abrahamists, proponents of ochlocracy/democracy (rather than Socratic-Platonic republic/meritocracy), scientific materialists (i.e. people who believe only matter exists, rather than dualists or idealists who think only life/mind/spirit exists), or people who prefer free-market capitalism rather than social capitalism. I'd like to illustrate something with a good social message, but it doesn't have to be obvious, and well-done entertainment writing, almost any genre, but especially mythic/mystic/magic/fantasy (even/especially modern) theme or involving archetypal themes/format or aesthetic characters, is also fine.

In recent years I worked more on science/mathematics until earning a BS (almost two) with studio art minor, now spent more time on the science job search and exploring philosophy. Though most my recent art is sketches (which bothered the last writer I talked to), art's easier and more fundamental to me than things like bike-riding (which you don't forget after days/months/years) and knowing writing, even more fundamental than being conscious of my existence/self/identity (i.e., I've been drawing since infancy).

I'm an illustrator, sculptor in most/all main types of medium & media (including learning digital, but haven't done 'stone' sculpture, though used plaster of Paris, and not metal sculpture besides added details). I prefer science fiction & fantasy (SF&F), mostly do ancient/Mediaeval-setting fantasy art, though now may prefer modern fantasy (at least reading). I'm willing to try any well-known genres except romance and horror unless mixed in another genre, and won't do fan-fiction except of public domain works (I want to potentially to do this for a living) and for realist fiction I prefer historical, or modern stuff I read first (or get it explained) and like (i.e., similar to famous/classic writers' didactic works). I've done 60+ comics pages in my life, mostly unpublished, and most in a professional traditional way, i.e. ink on 11x17 thick paper. I don't know much about new genres (though I've read one 'steampunk' comic story without knowing it was, and liked it, though I dislike the term because 'punk' usually doesn't apply) which doesn't mean I won't try them.

I won first place awards in primary school (contest by a student), high school (award by teacher), and my university professor told me 'if portraiture was an industry, you'd be a CEO [chief executive officer] of a portraiture corporation'. According to http://www.cambridgebrainsciences.com tests I took, I'm in top 1/10,000 to 1/1,000,000 in visual skills.

I'm European/British/Scottish (grew up through first year/class/grade of school in greater London area, England, UK, but after that, often a rural person) & Czech-/Bohemian-American, considered smart/gifted/talented, also into doing writing, music, and am spiritual/mystic/esoterist/'occultist', and I like classic SF&F such as JRR Tolkien & CS Lewis' books, and 'Star Trek' & 'Star Wars'... I've read 1000+ books, largely comics, philosophy, science, and previously much literary text SF&F... so my list of many other favourite writers would be long and I'll talk about them later. I'm a big fan of Vertigo DC, like the longest series ('Hellblazer') and 75-issue ones ('Sandman', 'The Books of Magic', 'Lucifer'), so I'd probably also like some/much of Marvel's earlier, similar Epic Comics (like the original colour 'Elfquest' art detail & colour except eventually the cartoon-type thing of elves having four fingers on a hand). Other than that, as an artist, I like iconic DC characters when well-illustrated, more than Marvel, that's praised for ideas/writing (but at least at one time, for hiring DC artists who developed more skill), but I read some Marvel. I've read a lot of Doctor Strange. Maybe two-thirds what I read is independent/small-press.

I prefer 'full script' over 'plot script' ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Script_(comics) ) so expect a writer or editor to know and be able to describe what they want, such as who will do what (pencilling, inking, colouring, mixed art, lettering), format (comic panel/strip, comic book), style (realism, inked realism, various manga, various cartoon non-realism), how characters and every important setting or background detail looks, even layout like if a page should have 'white space' borders, and be white or black there and between panels. I don't mind designing characters, settings, being left to much on my own, but also prefer showing work in progress (and prefer to more for digital art, since it's still barely more difficult, especially constraints on background in digital panels as opposed to traditional full-size painting).

My galleries on the 'net are at http://dchmelik.deviantart.com , http://www.elfwood.com/u/dmelik , http://davidchmelik.com/zenphoto . They vary slightly and are mostly traditional, older SF&F, but much of what I've done is of course modern realism (still-lifes and portraits) academically, along with various non-realism (a fair amount of Western cartoon style and a little manga cartoon style). The deviantART has the least, Elfwood has more, and my own site has most (but misses fiction writing and picture descriptions)
