Sir,
Looks like a fun map to work off of. What do you propose for running engagements? How many scenarios do you plan to play?

Click the two links at the top of the post, one is Op Husky the other are the Easy Campaign Rules for FoW to use with. Op Husky just details the camapaign specifics, and the campaign rules outline how it is to be run.

Let me know what you think.

Sean,
I just checked out the sites and they look like we could have a lot of fun. I think that we should see who would be interested in playing and what nation/force they would commit to. If you can make it out Saturday, we could talk about some of the work that would have to take place to ensure this campaign would be a success. If we take our time on this, we could possibly start a tournament off of this creation.

I think I could put together a 1st INF DIV American landing force.

In short, someone moves all the divisions on the map and from that we can determine what battles are to be played and for how many points. Who ever wants to play the battle can. The divisions involved have a list of companies you can use, each player picks one and plays the game. No one is required to stick with just one company, one division, or even one side. All though it makes it more fun if people get into their side/division.

In the first turn of this campaign there isnt more than three battles possible. If we got 6 players for a tournament this would be a great way to start it off.

I don't expect the Axis to win. The allies have twice the number of divisions. And you can't trust the Italians Wink

As for this Saturday, what time were you guys thinking, I am not sure if i can come in Saturday or Sunday, Friday might be esier for me.

Herr,
I think the best way to do this is to find out who would commit to something simple (axis or allies). Once we have a running head count, we then set a date for about 1 or two months down the road (I think that two months would be best as it gives us flexibility) and confirm head counts. Once that is done, we write S2 (intelligence) estimates for each of the players involved. This way they can understand the terrain, ememy capabilites and importance of what they need to field.
This is where it gets fun for the writers of the campaign:
1) Players are directed to play a specific division and allow them to determine the company they field.
-OR-
2) The players must design a unit based around a historical battalion/company.
Once we play out the first match, we can write OP Husky based on the results. This gives the Axis the ability to not only hold the island, but force the Allies to retreat! Alternative history rules!!!

Saturday is my only day for gaming this week. If it does not work now, no sweat. But for anyone eles reading this, let me know if you are in?

I don't think a date should be set. It should go for as long as you want it to.

Head count also isnt necessary as it can be played by as many and as few players as you want. As long as two players want to play we are good to go.

The intellegence estimates for the divisions available are already listed with the division. It illustrates the types of company that can be played for that division. Terrain is determined by the players, mission is determined by the players.

Have you read the rules linked at the top of the page. Op Husky says what forces are available, who goes first, and objectives. The campaign mechanics are described in the other document.

Sean,
I did look over the rules, but this is what I am getting at:
1) As for players, I say a head count so that you could better plug a historical mission much like Terry did with the Salerno Campaign. Of course we could plug and play small missions, but I was thinking it might be fun to have a game that has repercussions for losing. If you fall back because your force lost, where is the next engagement going to take place.
2) Terrain is established by the players, but what if before the game was played, we went and used Google Earth to plot the terrain and make a truly historical layout as it was fought? I think that would be just awesome!
3) The only reason that I think a date might be a good idea to use is that people will clear schedules to ensure they can play. We could make this a rather cool operation that lasts over 5-7 separate engagements. There is nothing stating that we could not play independent missions that have no major impact on the overall out come of the mission. The other reason why I think that time lines are good, we will get board with Scicily and may what to play some Eastern Front, Finland or West Europe in the near future. I think that this could be better discussed over a cup of coffee in person.

1. Look closely at the easy campaign rules. If you lose a game 1-6 the division takes a moral test and is destroyed if it loses. Also if you lose any game and have no where to reatreat to it is also destroyed. And I didnt make any historical mission. I find them very unbalanced and difficult to reproduce. Don't get me wrong, I like historical missions, and we can add one or more to this, but your gonna have to put something together on paper so we can all understand it.

2. The rules already say to use the map as a guide for terrain. If you want to use google maps to figure out a tiny piece of terrain that two companies may have fought over, you can! Nonetheless both players will still need to agree. And I just played a game at merlyns. The terrain for FoW was horrible, and we used the stuff I had in my car to make a passable table. It would be completly sweet if we had really historical terrain, but who is going to put the tons of money and time it would take to put it together? It is difficult enough to just get people to stop using 40k terrain.

3. The campaign is intended to give players something to focus on during regular meetings. No one is obligated to play. First no part of the campaign should ever ever depend upon an individual person. The rules as written will last 10-100 engagements or more. Every battle played has a direct impact on the overall outcome of the situation. You need to see how the map works to see that.

It would be great if we could all get together and discuss it more. Until then all I can say is please carefully read the Easy Campaign Rules and then the Operation Husky rules. I have played several campaigns, written three rule sets, and read many more. Campaigns are really really hard to pull off for a number of reasons. The rules I put together avoid a lot of those issues.

Sean,
I agree that we should hold off any other talk until we can sit down and go over some of the points.
