Howdy all, figured I might post about what we have going on most Sunday nights down at Merlyn's. I started a small campaign when I discovered that CBT hadn't died (only took me 20 years to get back into it), that is a learning campaign for a couple of friends of mine and something a little out of the ordinary for many people.
Instead of starting a game by declaring a point total limit/requirement, we are starting out with one, randomly rolled, mech for each player. This mech is theirs for the duration of the game or until something better comes along (or you just get shot out of it). Each player has a composition notebook that they keep notes in of their current contract, salaries or payments received for work, repairs that they needed to pay out for their equipment and whatever they may have been able to salvage from the battlefield. With these records, each individual has the opportunity to either found their own mercenary unit or team up with another player and start building a unit together; it is entirely up to the players. The existing two players are piloting a Madcat Prime and a Warhammer that has been refitted with a mike of IS and Clan tech (which doesn't always work together, LOL). The first mission was accomplished with having the Warhammer pilot hiring an additional 3 mechs for a mission that they lost a NPC and their Commando on, so what was a "recon" mission turned into a route pretty quickly and decisively. I don't write scenarios that are always easy, but I do write scenarios that are attainable, so be prepared and bring your "good dice".
For salvage rights, if you disable something on the battlefield and hold the field at the end of the scenario, then the record sheet is yours, and I will loan you the mini while we play for a couple of sessions if you can get it repaired and hire a pilot to use it. This makes the potential for building a merc unit pretty high, but I do not permanently loan any minis out, so if you plan to field it regularly, you might want to pick up one of your own.
I do allow the use of Dark Age minis in my games, so long as they are either to scale (lets face it, their scale system was a little "off" for a lot of things) or you are just using it for a couple of times while waiting on a IWM/RP mini. I also don't have a problem with using minis from other game systems (CAV being a good example), so long as it is an appropriate representation for what you are fielding and if it is a unique design it must follow construction rules and have records showing it's development to explain it's existence.
Other then that I only have 2 requirements; come with a good attitude and bare with me while I re-learn the rules. If you know more about the rules then I do, please wait until after the night's game session to correct me, as their may have been a different reason for my doing it the way I did other then not remembering that part of the rules.
Thanks, I will post a memo on the bulletin board at Merlyn's with contact information and you can also PM me through this board.
