PostPosted: Sun Nov 30, 2014 7:04 pm    Post subject: Holidays With Merlyns: Scott

It's that time of year again, and I can't tell you how much I love the winter holidays. Now that we're all stuffed from big Thanksgiving dinners, it's time to start thinking about something special for the special people in our lives.

I can't tell you how many times I get asked what would be a good gift for someone over the course of December, so I'm going to preempt that a bit this year. While we've got a ton of other stuff that is great for Christmas gifts, here's a list of ten things I would love to see under the tree at the end of the month:

10. Brave Rats: This game is a ton of fun, and it can be played just about anywhere, and with just about anyone. I've gotten hours of enjoyment out of playing this with my friends, and I look forward to hours more!

9. Marvel Dicemasters: This is a really cool game similar to Quarriors, but based in the Marvel Universe. We've currently got the second starter deck (with the X-Men) and a bunch of boosters available. This game looks awesome, and it's also really accessible.

8. Heroclix Boosters: We have an awesome selection of Heroclix here at Merlyns, and if there's something more fun than having little superheroes and villains fight, I've yet to discover it. Maybe I'm just a kid at heart, but I love the figures and the game. The newest set is based on the Flash, so there's a ton of cool characters from the comics to collect!

7. Betrayal at House on the Hill: This is one of the best board games I've ever played. Exploring the house is different every time, and I've never seen a game with more content stuffed inside. With 50 different scenarios, and a ton of backstabbing, you'll find yourself playing this again and again.

6. Deadpool Volume 1: There are a ton of good graphic novels out there, but few of them can compare to Brian Posehn's Deadpool for the number of laughs they've given me. What better way to bring joy and laughter to the holidays is there than to give someone a book that will make them laugh?

5. Adventure Time Volume 1: ADVENTURE TIME! I'm a big fan of everything Pendleton Ward writes, and I'm of the opinion that everyone should at least give his books a try. Adventure Time is a graphic novel with the first 6 comics in the series, and it is hilariously good fun. There is no one I wouldn't be comfortable buying this for.

4. Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook: The fifth edition of D&D is here, and it is fun. Anyone who plays RPGs should take a look at the new rules, and the Player's Handbook is just the resource you need to have fun with the game. I'm a big fan of returning to some of the more basic mechanics, and the elegance of the system is great.

3. Savage Worlds Handbook: For any RPG players who are interested in alternative systems or settings, the Savage Worlds book is a must. Not only is it incredibly well designed, the game is easy to adapt to any system. Whether you want to play a high fantasy quest or explore the secrets in space, Savage Worlds will help you on your way.

2. Magic Holiday Gift Boxes: I love the Holiday boxes that Wizards puts out every year. They come with boosters, and as any Magic player can tell you, there's no such thing as too many boosters. In addition, they always come with a promo, some basic land, and some really cool dividers. Despite the fact that I've already bought three of these, I'd love to see one underneath the tree on Christmas morning.

1. Magic 2014 Commander Decks: I love Magic, and I've played it for most of my life. Commander is easily my favorite type. These preconstructed decks are amazing, and easily my favorite gift option this year. Commander is a casual format that brings out the best in Magic, and the best in Magic players, and I'd love to see some of that love shared on Christmas.

As always, we here at Merlyns are more than happy to answer any questions you might have, and we're more than happy to help with any problems. The rest of our staff will be doing similar lists in the coming weeks, so keep checking back here or drop in at the store for more gift ideas!
