I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the World of Warcraft RPG.

As I have mentioned in a few other places, I play World of Warcraft. In fact, it would be pretty safe to say that I play a lot of WoW.

My primary character is on a Role Playing server for 2 essential reasons:

1) Mindless grinding sometimes wears and Role Playing offers a nice break.

2) Warcraft has a surprisingly well developed history and not taking advantage of it seemed like a waste.

I love games with rich histories that still allow you to create a unique character that stands out within the framework of the setting. It is part of the reason that I never really warmed up to the Forgotten Realms setting... while very complete, it always felt too busy. No matter who you were or what character you played, it seemed like it had been done before. Warcraft, by comparison, still has room for new, intrepid adventurers to shine.

Naturally, I was still sceptical when the WoW pen and paper book was released. However, curiousity finally got the best of me (the book is quite shiny, you know... :D)

This brings me to my primary point: I ended up picking the book up that day. In spite of a few rather cheesy uses of game images for illustrations, it was overall a rather pretty book. I worried at first that some of the classes seemed a little overpowering, but upon complete exploration, I realised that all the classes were a bit broken, achieving a sense of balance without pulling punches. The best part of all was that it provided enough detail to allow thorough enjoyment of the setting without having to buy ten or twelve campaign setting books.

Yet, something still seemed missing. I found myself having to constantly reference the old Warcraft RPG: Magic and Mayhem book to find the classes and rules that I really wanted. I was a little disappointed because it kind of ruined the experience.

Then, a couple weeks ago, More Magic and Mayhem was released, providing updated versions of the old M&M rules for the new corebook. The book outlines everything from mechanical suits of armour to the exact workings of troll mojo for witch doctors, along with an assortment of new spells in the "Power Overwhelming" section and fun new magic items in the "So Shiny" chapter. There is a lot of powerful swag available for players, but nothing that will ruin the fun entirely.

It nicely filled out the system, meaning that what was a cool but clunky system is now one of my favorite d20 rule-sets. DMs might still need to look at the old Monstrous Manual for it (or at worst your D&D Monster Manual will do the job), but otherwise it stands well on its own with just the two books.

In any case, I highly recommend it for anybody that likes the Warcraft Universe, and it is even worth checking out for somebody not that familiar with it. You might find out that you are an Azerothian at heart...
