So... Black Templar.

Traditionally, my feelings on the Boyz in Black have been somewhat mixed. On the one hand, I appreciate their feel. The feel like what marines and, indeed, the Imperium as a whole should be like. Also, Rogal Dorn is an arrogant jerk, and I love him for that.

On the other hand, however, they have always been somewhat broken. And by "somewhat" I mean "very". Their incarnation in the last edition of 40K had no visible drawbacks. Those traits intended as drawbacks worked with the rest of the list such as to actually make them stronger. Add in the fact that you could custom tailor the SAME LIST from game to game using the vows gave them an unfair advantage in tournament settings.

The new book fixes all that. All the major balance issues that the Templar had in 3rd Edition has been washed away. Vows? They are paid for as part of your Emperor's Champion. Falling back towards your enemy? That only happens if you PASS the morale check rather than any time they fail.

Add a plethora of juicy fluff bits, a variety of customization options, and the "Holy Orbs of Antioch" wargear, and you get a winning Codex. Just be careful when you opponent pulls one out...

i'm the newest templar player
from what i've seen so far, templar are more balanced than daemonhunters while still being strong enough against marine killers. the enormous reliance on troops still allows for a mind-numbing variety of combinations. the revised rules perserve the flavor of the templar while still allowing a skilled opponent to work the mechanics in their favour. my only complaint is the lack of artillery ( Sad ) and the flavourless rape of the system by forcing all inquisitors to be psykers, regardless of powers, thus precluding them from being allies in a templar list.(that one's got me po'd)

also, the templar are just cool. really, really cool.
