Sunday saw my local games clubs run a joint tournament , we (The Ribble Warriors Wargames Club) joined forces with the Coppull and Chorley Knights (yes I know it spells C.A.C.K but they picked the name
) to run a competition - the Ribble Warriors have been running our Golden Troll (GT - geddit ?) competition for 9 years and this year we decided to move to C.A.C.K's venue , which is larger , and make it an open tournament.
I was playing/umpiring at the FoW section of the GTand using a Kursk PantherKompanie
- the Panther Kompanie is an army I have borrowed because I had to play Axis at our Club tournament to make an even number of Axis - Allies , I would have used the Americans but one of the players swopped sides at the last minute and I had to change , I had one practise game with the Panthers that I won 6-1 but on the day my luck was abysmal , I went down 5-2 to a british rifle company , 5-2 to a Russian Stelkovy Batalion and 6-1 to an Aussie Rifle company !
The scenarios were Encounter , Hold the Line , Fighting Withdrawal. To stretch my army out a bit I had a platoon of 3 Panthers and Kampfgrupped another to the 2ic to give my 3 platoons (1X3 , 2X2 and commander) I played British Rifles game 1 , Strelkovy Batalion game 2 and Australian Rifles game 3 . I was fairly confident going into the tournament due to my practise game but...........................
The Brits did for me with Artillery and Air Power combined with my inability to roll higher than a one for my armour , he never bailed me just blew up my tanks
then his three platoons of Universal Carriers came on and raced down to the objective - his infantry and artillery guarding his objectives withstanding my Tank assaults long enough to win , the Russians swarmed me with sappers although I crushed his tank and anti tank platoons I could not get rid of his 40 strong infantry company (reduced it to 5 stands though) and a lucky kill of my company commander forced a morale check and game over
and the Aussies just got very , very lucky with 2pdr armed crusaders which tally ho! ed into the flank armour of my 3 tank platoon and did for them and a 6pdr ambush which again caught a luky flank of two tanks that had just captured an objective and left them smoking ruins - again a company morale check and game over
I actually finished last in my own tournament and had to bring the wooden spoon back with me ! There were 14 players with an even Axis-Allies split which we played to over the 3 games.
Overall the British Rifle I played first won the whole thing , with a German PanzerKompanie secon and DAK Pioneers Third.
If you fancy a giggle and to look at possibly the strangest collection of Wargamers ever then look at the gallery section of www.ribwar.our-info.org
