I have 2 strellks that I can use, but one of them is horribly painted from very long ago, and another one is just primed.

Just visited with John, he says we may have some visitors to watch on Sunday. Perhaps we can give them a small platoon of some sort to push around and feel how the rules work, if they show up and want to participate.

I will print out extra reference sheets, just in case.

Sean,

Did you notice that your Soviet tanks do not have H&C in early war, but have Ammo Shortage instead. You also gain the wave rule as well. Any lt tank company with T26 or BT tanks or any Strelk company when lost gets a roll to see if a new one shows up for free.

Yeah, plus they get the ramming rules! haha, but personally I think these rules were poorly written.

Yeah,

The old EW pdf's were written for version 1 rules and were really the first stuff BF put out. Some 4-7 years ago. Our game on Sunday can be considered a playtest of sorts since I will be writing up an opinion piece on points and how each unit does on the battlefield.

Sounds good chris, I have no clue whether mine are the old or new ones, because I got them off of the early war yahoo group.

Evan,

You have the new version write up. With HMG's at rof 6 and arty cheaper.
Those are the lists we are all using, I hope.

Sean,

It appears that Hen & Chicks is alive and well in the EW, it was inadventantly left out of the new version. If you go to the EW Yahoo group it has been added to the pdf.

So, Confident Conscript, H&C, Ammo Shortage and Wave Attacks, gotta love the Soviets. Half the rules cause problems, the other half add something. Kommisars, QoQ, etc.

What a tough fight.

The 4th Panzer Division spear headed by the Recon Company easily broke thru the Soviet Infantry defending the Crossroads. The armored cars and panzer 2's made quick work of a Soviet Lt. Tank Compan of BT's. The follow on force of panzer 3's and 4's from the Main Force finished off the T26's and BA-6 armored cars. Destroying 25 lt tanks for the loss of 3 221 armored cars and a pz 1.

Unfortunately the pz 38 force was lost to some 45mm AT guns guarding the Romny Bridge. Then 3 T34/40's came out and helped finish off the pz 38's. With 2 destroyed and one bailed, the unit promptly failed its morale and fled North back towards Moscow.

Yet the way was open to Romny. Yet to the South, remnants of the 87th rifle division and the 5th Soviet Airborne brigade were completely holding off the German advance. This unit after this battle was renamed the 13th Guards Rifle Division for their third successive breakout from an encirclement. Their commander Rodimtsev eventually commanded not only the 5th Airborne Battalion, but then the 87th Rifle Division, followed by the 13th Guards rifle Division at Stalingrad and eventually was put in charge of the 64th army group and became second in command to Zhukov.

No wonder that Taber had a hard time cracking the nut facing him. Every one of those defending rifle teams were crack airborne units destined to win the Star of the Soviet Union and the order of Lenin including the infamous Pavlov.

Needless to say, the Germans only broke thru on one flank and given another few turns should have made it to Romny to seal the escape route. Unfortunately, as night fell. The Soviets just infiltrated past the open German lines and huge chunks of the formations made it to freedom. Leaving only their tanks, trucks, guns and supplies.

We have to call it a draw. The Soviets were never encircled, yet none of the Soviets reached Romny and safety before night fall.

I will write more later. But that is my quick synopsis for the moment.

I feel the points are about right, I feel the confident conscript combined with ammo shortage and hen and chicks is a good fit for the Soviets. The Soviet mass infantry suffered many more pins and stayed pinned since they were not fearless.

So for our quick 4+ hour playtest I am ok with the prices as they are. The wave rule sucks, but what can you do. We killed two full lt tank companies, yet he rolled 4+ and boom, both were back in the game. Yuck. But with their light to non existant armor and decent 45mm gun, those tanks could have been devastating had they massed and come at the Germans in one go, concentrating on a single German platoon at a time.

I don't like the draw, but cannot blame Taber for his stall, since I gave him the force to play with. Perhaps, he can write up his own force next time and will do better.

Taber, smoke? You had two double templates of smoke and could have smoked his entire line of infantry, moved everything else within range, wait one turn and then lift smoke, bombard, shoot and assault. Front broken. Never, never forget your smoke as a German pzgren or gren commander. It is the most important asset you have on the attack and allows you to get within striking range with everything without getting shot. Then blowing a gaping hole in the line.

As overall commander I blew it and gave you a force you weren't comfortable attacking with. My bad.

Historically, the combined 5th airborne brigade and 87th rifle division were able to stall this attack and slip out of the encirclement. This unit was combined together to reform the 87th and later took part in the Soviet Winter offensive of 41/42 that smashed most of the German Panzer Divisions down to less than 40% strength.

The 87th became the 13th Guards rifle division and went into Stalingrad with 10,000 troops to hold the Mamayev Kurgan. They took 97% casualties, so 300 or so walking wounded held the bank of the Volga including Pavlov's House and the HQ or the Red Army in Stalingrad. 9,700 killed, 300 wounded but fighting holding just a few acres of the Western Banks of the Volga long enough for the reinforcements to make it across and the big counterattack to take place and encircle Paulus' German 6th Army.

Once again we ended with another Historical result. Only a few divisions made it out of the Kiev pocket and those were the ones in the advance spearhead heading towards Romny. The Germans did close the pocket, but did not catch everything.

Well done everyone. Good game Sean, David and Evan. Good Job Bill and sorry Taber for giving you the wrong force. My bad.

Chris,
I should've broken through that line.....he did manage to resist 2 mounted assaults in a row and his line was waning into the latter stage of the game (after I got my AT, Assault, and 88 guns up to his line).....
