Merlyn's is hosting a Warhammer 40k tournament on Sunday, April 11th! Lists will be 1000 points, and signups will start at 10:00. There will be a $5 entry fee that will be added to the prize pool, which begins at $50.

Some general rules:
-Warhammer 40,000 5th Edition Rules will be used.
- Rules and Army Lists marked as ‘Trial’ or ‘Optional’ are not allowed. Unofficial rules sets are not allowed. In addition, the Following are NOT legal for the 40K Tournament:
Armored Company (Any Variation)
- Specific Zone fighting rules will NOT be in effect – Including Jungle Fighting or City Fighting.
- The models used in your army must be Games Workshop Miniatures.
- What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). If you wish to use an item, it must be represented on the figure. Each figure must be fitted to the base supplied for the figure in its blister or box. Only Vehicles may be without a base.
- You must bring all materials needed to play including dice, templates, measuring devices, templates, models, calculators, and any rules that you will be using. If the Codex is available for your army you must have it with you at all times. You must also have the latest version of the FAQ for your army, available from the Games Workshop website. Each player should also bring at least 3 objective markers on 40mm bases.
- Each player must provide their opponent during each round a copy of their army list.
- All Tournament missions are considered ‘Standard’ for Space Marine Drop Pod special rules.
- In order to keep the Tournament running on schedule, when time is called for a round, all players must drop their dice and stop playing – no exceptions. Because of this, please be aware of the time left in the round and do not start a full turn you cannot finish. At a minimum, a 30-minute warning will be called by the Judge.
- If illegal units or Tournament rules violations are found in a player’s list, at a minimum, the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. Please check with Tournament judges prior to the event for any questions in advance.
- All rulings by the Tournament judges will be final.
- If a model is listed in an official GW Codex and it does not have a GW or ForgeWorld figure available for it, you may use an appropriate scratch-built model or conversion to represent it. Otherwise, you must use an appropriate GW or ForgeWorld model to represent the unit in question.

Games, Scoring, and Prizes

- There will be 3 rounds in the Tournament, with each round consisting of one two-hour game.

Schedule

The following rules are subject to change.

10:00 – Doors open
10:00 – 10:30 – Set up, Sign-In, and Introductions

So is the new Blood Angels codex going to be allowed for this tournament? I've heard of several tournaments that ban a codex from competing until it has been out for at least a month, to allow players to get use to the new kid on the block.

I know you guys down there don't usually have painting/sportsmanship, but at 1000 pts will there be any? Cause if not, 2 land raiders sound awesome...ooo or better yet 2 lash whips with oblits!

Igmar- Now where's the fun in that? The blood angels codex will be legal for this event, and I'm excited to see what new lists we'll see from the blood angels and those looking to beat them.

Calcaneus- The base supplied with the model, which for current Eldar jetbikes are the larger flying bases. I am generally lenient for bases of the same general size and height, especially if it's clear you aren't trying to gain an advantage.

imukuni- I must confess as to a little confusion as to what painting/ sportsmanship have to do with army selection. I do not place restrictions on what some people call "cheesy" lists because any such judgments are far too subjective and arbitrary. You may feel free to bring any list that both conforms to the standard force org chart and that you feel you can have fun with. Just be aware that my mission selections are semi-random and that I have way more objective based missions than kill points.

I should note that I do award sportsman prizes at some of my tournaments. I do not award them all the time, and in fact do not announce them until late in the tournament, for two reasons. First, I expect award-winnning sportsmanship from my players at all times, and I award exceptionally poor sportsmanship with a dq. Secondly, in my experience a consistant sportsmanship award tends to be misused, either as a third (or last) place award, peer pressure to accept other unsportsmanlike behavior, or by winding up a constant tie for fear of seeming like a jerk.

I find that I can circumvent many of these problems by surprising players with a sportsman vote and keeping the ballot secret so that they aren't thinking about that extra prize throughout the event.

painting and sport don't have anything to do with the lists, they have to do with the players.
sportsmanship has the ability to keep people in line and can have people taking less cheesy armies. (even a composition score would be cool). Painting reinforces the idea that 40k is a hobby with a game, not just game and allows for people who too the time and energy to paint something to show for it. I've played at merlyns for years and not until the last year and a half did they get "that's where the cheaters play", or "cheese city" as tag lines. Many refuse to go there because of this. I hate to see that happen to a store I love so much, but highly competitive tournies and attitudes make for highly competitive players. Many of which themselves are getting bad reps, not as tough gamers, but as jerks.

Btw The secret thing is kinda cool.

Imukuni, I see where you are going with this, and do relate to it. These additional scoring areas can even the playing field from a fluffy list and a hard beat face list. Lessens the chance of playing "oh that list" again several times.

However it can also work both ways, someone getting scored lower by a player to get a points edge over them etc. If player A dislikes on a personal level player B, they may not score the army based on the painting or composition but on how much they like the other player. It adds subjectivity to the results and can add further complication to the process.

Just to be clear I can see both sides of the issue, and I lay on the side of painting (my army is not fully painted) and sportsmanship being used in the process. I feel that players in general are honest, the few on the other side are statistical blips that will probably earn lower sportsmanship marks to even out their misuse of the subjectivity of scoring.

And to make my long post even longer.....Sportsmanship is just common courtesy. The people who are jerky about things are not necessarily using power gaming armies. I think you can use a power house army and be a good sportsman. Attitude and a hard list will get you a bad rep, as will a soft list and bad attitude.

There is my big ramble on. If you read the whole thing (anyone!) I will give you a cookie.

I get a cookie! lol. It's true there is not perfect system, (maybe the old objective based GW way?). I'm just a bit concerned. Anyone can go online, find a power list, build it and win with it. Not everyone can put a smile on the face of the opponent they just annihilated.

I guess I'm just a firm believer that I would rather lose a tourny and have fun, than to win and played jerks (done both). Tournies force players to adapt to a certain style of playing in order to win, if it is always ard boyz style they will always play like that, and most of them do. If the stress is on sportsmanship and having balanced lists then everyone can go and have fun.
