BRIGHTEST DAY continues, but in ways you can't possibly expect!

What does BRIGHTEST DAY mean to the DC Universe?

Is everything from here on out going to be bright and shiny?

No, BRIGHTEST DAY means something else entirely.

Why does Aquaman only summon dead sea life?
Why is Deadman alive?
Why can't anyone pick up the white lantern?

This is a great start to what seems like a really compelling new mini-series.

What do YOU think will happen?
The Philadelphia Enquirer says this:

'Brightest Day' in DC universe

By JEROME MAIDA
Philadelphia Daily News

For the Daily News
"They've been resurrected - for a reason!"

That's the tag line for DC's ambitious and mysterious new title, "Brightest Day."

Issue No. 0 sets the stage for the series, briefly introducing readers to the recently resurrected characters who again have a role to play in the DC Universe.

They include: Boston Brand, Aquaman, Reverse-Flash, the original Captain Boomerang, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, Martian Manhunter, Jade, Ronnie Raymond, Osiris and Hawk.

Thanks to the deft storytelling by writers Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi, new readers are brought up to speed on each of these characters' powers and importance.

The biggest positive Comics Guy sees with the book - which will be coming out twice a month - is that it seems to be a conscious effort by the DC Powers That Be to have their heroes act like heroes again and to have a more optimistic feeling to the DC Universe and the stories told within. This comes as a welcome relief to fans tired of the emphasis on death and destruction over the past few years.

(Comics Guy would argue that such storytelling has been increasingly dominant since "Watchmen" and "The Dark Knight Returns" almost a quarter-century ago.)

There are some negatives in the book. The merging of Firestorms uses death as a device to move the story along and give it gravitas, which is what "Brightest Day" is supposedly trying to get away from.

Also, some characters brought back are those whose deaths had the greatest impact on readers the past several years. By bringing them all back at once, DC is saying death is as meaningless in its universe as ever.

All that aside, Comics Guy trusts Johns and appreciates what DC is trying to do. The pendulum has swung too far.

Here's hoping "Brightest Day" not only tells compelling stories but fulfills its promise of giving us hopeful heroes we can root for again on a regular basis.
Let us know!
