I've run into a few people lately who said they'd like to get into comics, but they're such a "soap opera", It'd be hard to jump in.
I've even run into the gaping, saucer eyed look of someone who just found out Bruce Wayne isn't really Batman anymore.
(Yep. Just like that.)
So I thought I'd try to catch some people up on some of the comics and storylines we get in. I WON'T be doing EVERY comic though.
What I'll be doing is catching you up on comics that are coming out certain weeks, like this weeks titles. That way, you can pick and choose.
Alright? Let's DO THIS!!

First, we'll start with DC.

This bi-weekly book revolves around the Justice League International, specifically the characters Captain Atom, Booster Gold, Jaime Reyes (the third Blue Beetle), Fire, Ice, and Rocket Red, and their hunt for the recently resurrected Maxwell Lord, who killed the 2nd Blue Beetle and has mind control powers so strong, he made Superman into a killing machine. Wonder Woman, having no choice, snapped his neck, but because of the events in Brightest Day. The team soon discover that Lord has erased all memory of his existence from the minds of everyone but the four of them. The four try to relate the truth to other heroes but are universally disbelieved. When confronted with an image of Wonder Woman killing Lord, Superman reports that he sees only a photo of Wonder Woman alone. When Booster Gold shows the same images to Batman (Dick Grayson) he tells Booster Gold that, as far as the world knows, Bruce Wayne (instead of Max Lord) restarted the Justice League, Lex Luthor usurped the OMAC project and Ted Kord committed suicide.

Bruce Wayne was killed by the villain Darkseid. (Not so much killed, but whisked away into the past where he slowly made his way to present day). During his absence, Dick Grayson, the first Robin, has taken over the mantle of the bat. Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's son by Talia al Ghul, takes on the role of Robin (replacing an eighteen-year old Tim Drake, who has since become Red Robin).
Bruce Wayne now poses as Batman when needed but now travels the World "Incorporating" a Batman in every country.

The new Flash series begins after the events of The Flash: Rebirth, Barry Allen is reintegrating himself into life in Central City. Under the cover of having been in witness protection, Allen returns to the Central City Police Department's crime lab and returns to the streets as the Flash.

We follow Supes now as the story has him exiting a congressional hearing about the "Hundred Minute War,"( A war in which some other Kryptonians tried to take over earth) he is confronted with the notion that he has grown disconnected from everyday Americans he has been committed to watching over, and doesn't truly know what his adopted people are like anymore. Feeling a responsibility to his adopted homeland, he begins a long journey where he will walk across the United States to reconnect with the everyday people he is committed to protecting

Now, onto some Marvel titles.

The Secret Warriors were thrown into battle for the first time when the Skrulls kicked their invasion of Earth into high gear. Manhattan became a war zone with Super Skrulls devastating the city, and Fury led the team into the heart of the battle. This is more of a realistic "GI JOE" title as it really deals with espionage and undercover battles. The characters are:
Nick Fury: Founder and leader of the Secret Warriors
Quake: She possesses the power to create earthquake-like vibrations.
Phobos: Son of Ares. He possesses the power to instill fear in others as well as limited pre-cognition.
The Druid: Sebastian Druid, the son of Doctor Druid who has inherited some of his father's skill with magic. However, he is soon seen as a liability and Fury seemingly cuts him loose. It is later shown that Fury in fact put Druid through "Boot Camp", assigning John Garrett to get him in shape and boost his confidence.
Slingshot: Yo-yo Rodriguez, she can run at superhuman speed and bounces back to the point where she began running.
Hellfire: J.T. James, the grandson of the Phantom Rider, is able to charge items (notably a chain) with fire and unleash a devastating attack.
Stonewall: Jerry Sledge, who possesses superhuman strength and an ability to increase his size, while his skin appears to take an appearance resembling stone.
Eden Fesi: A reality warping young man previously under the care and training of the mutant Gateway.

FEAR ITSELF (Marvels big Summer crossover)

During World War II, the Red Skull on orders of Adolf Hitler performs a ritual which causes the Hammer of Skadi (which belonged to the Asgardian goddess Skadi) to fall to Earth where it lands in Antarctica. Traveling to Antarctica, the Red Skull finds the hammer but is unable to lift it. Red Skull has Adolf Hitler's Thule Society seal it away and put it under their guard. Many years later, Red Skull's daughter Sin retrieves the Book of the Skull that contains the location of the hammer.
While Tony Stark holds a press conference with the Avengers by his side to announce that his company Stark Resilient will help rebuild Asgard in the wake of the Siege, Sin uncovers the Hammer of Skadi. Upon lifting the hammer Sin becomes Skadi and frees her father, the god of fear from an underwater prison. Odin, the father of the Norse gods, senses the return of the god of fear. Angered that his people are to become recipients of human altruism, and further infuriated by the refusal of Uatu the Watcher, whom he encounters, to provide answers, Odin commands his people to return to the Asgardian plane, against the protests of Thor, whom he has chained and dragged against his will.

One of the more funner books out now (and soon to be a movie with Ryan "I get around" Reynolds). Lots of fun killing, blowing things up and snappy comebacks. He also made Empire magazine's list of The 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters.
These books, like Batman's, have small 3-4 issue story arcs, so you can jump in almost anytime.

With the Registration Act having been revoked in the aftermath of the Siege of Asgard led by Osborn (who is incarcerated for his actions), Steve Rogers (the original Captain America) reassembles the Avengers. Steve convinces Luke Cage to be part of the new lineup after Tony Stark sells the reconstructed Avengers Mansion to Cage for a dollar. Given the freedom to recruit almost anyone he wants for the New Avengers team (except Iron Man or Thor), Cage selects Spider-Man, Clint Barton (who has re-assumed the Hawkeye identity), Mockingbird, Wolverine, Jewel (Cage's wife), Ms. Marvel, Iron Fist and the Thing (who maintains concurrent membership in the Fantastic Four).
Currently the team is trying to track down gems from the Infinity Gauntlet. The gems are so highly powerful, they had to be separated. They control everything from time to physics.

What I think is one of the best written comics right now and an Eisner Award Winner, this title has Tony Stark announces that he will form a new company, Stark Resilient. He also states that he will stop developing weapons, instead, he plans to use his repulsor technology to give free energy to the world. However, Justine and Sasha Hammer create their own armored hero, Detroit Steel, to take Stark's place as the Army's leading weapons-builder.

Want to get ready for the movie? Then here's whats going on in the title. During the events of the Siege storyline, Thor rushes to the defense of Asgard (his floating city home) against Norman Osborn and his invading Dark Avengers. Although the invading forces are ultimately defeated, Asgard itself is toppled and Loki is killed by the Sentry who in turn is killed by Thor. As result of the victory the Superhuman Registration Act is dissolved and Thor joins the rebranded Avengers, who came to his aid during the battle.

Independent comics are really hitting their stride as well with better storylines than most regularly known titles. Also, a big thing with Indy titles is that...ANYONE can be killed. There's no "Superman" to constantly be written around.
Some big names in the Indy scene are:
HELLBOY and the BPRD which are both dealing with a giant frog (yes, but inter-dimensional - demon frogs) who are taking over the World. And ya, they're winning.
WALKING DEAD which was just given a second season ok by AMC, follows a gruop of survivors in a zombie filled world. This IS NOT Zombieland or even Shaun of the Dead. It is also definitely not for the faint of heart. It deals a lot with the characters, not the situation, but also hits you so hard sometimes, some scenes are hard to forget.
IDW, BOOM and DYNAMITE are all doing well with titles like Green Hornet, GI JOE and just announced GHOSTBUSTERS Ongoing Series (SQUEAL LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!!!!).

And remember, if you're ever interested in a title I haven't listed, just ask us.

Alright. Last week I tackled some of the bigger names of titles we get in and this week is no different.
Again, we'll start with DC

This title sets Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Jokers main squeeze Harley Quinn together and the "oh the adventures they have."
Seriously though, if you're a girl and wanted to get into a batman title, this is a good one as it's written by Paul Dini, one the best best Batman writers out there.

The Legion of Super-Heroes is a fictional superhero team in the 30th and 31st centuries of the DC Comics Universe.

The character, both a stage magician and a real magician like her father Giovanni Zatara, is known for her involvement with the Justice League and her childhood association with Batman.
Again, another great strong female character written by Paul Dini. If magic is your thing, you should definitely check it out.

As I stated above, a lot of things have happened in the batman titles. Bruce Wayne died and while he was gone, the first Robin, Dick Grayson, took his place. Like many comics, Bruce Wayne fought death and came back. Now Bruce goes around the World and "hires" other people to be Batman in other countries, essentially guarding the entire World as Batman.

Power Girl is the Earth-Two counterpart of Supergirl and the first cousin of Superman.
This title is a personal favorite of mine as it really tries to being the fun back into comics, much like JLI did in the 80's. Currently, Powergirl (a lot like Tony Ironman Stark) is in the middle of starting up a new company when her account takes all her money. Now bankrupt, she tries to start it up again, while, you know, battling robotic dinosaurs and creepy, alien invaders bent on breeding with her for their planet. All in a days work.

Like the trailer for this years GREEN LANTERN movie? Want to know more, citizen?
The Green Lantern Corps is the name of the fictional intergalactic police force. They patrol the farthest reaches of the Universe at the behest of the Guardians, a race of immortals residing on the planet Oa. Currently operating divided as pairs amongst the 3600 “sectors” of the universe, over 7200 members (known commonly as Green Lanterns) are estimated as serving within the Corps. Each Green Lantern is given a power ring, a weapon granting the use of incredible abilities that are directed by the wearer's own willpower.

Now on to marvel comics:
Like Batman, a whole lot of things have been happening.
The newest series features the debut of a new Red Hulk, and Bruce Banner emerging from a coma and resuming his changes into the Green Hulk. After issue #12, The Incredible Hulk #600 was released, in which Red Hulk absorbs Hulk's radiation and claims Banner can never turn into the Hulk again. The series then continued with issue #13, with Banner questioning whether he should be glad that Hulk is gone or even if the Hulk is truly gone. The Incredible Hulk also continued with #601 onward, in which Banner seeks out his son Skaar, offering to train him to kill the Hulk in the eventuality of the Hulk's return. Under the aegis of megalomaniac Norman Osborn, Banner is re-exposed to gamma radiation, re-initiating the radiation in his body, thus allowing Banner to turn into the Hulk once more.
In the now retitled The Incredible Hulks #612, Banner tries to rekindle his marriage with Betty Ross, who is now the Red She-Hulk.

The Thunderbolts are a Marvel Comics superhero team, which consists mostly of former supervillains.
