Starting on August 20th, I'll be running a five week long ladder-based narrative campaign for Warhammer 40k.

If you want to play, see me (Steve) in store to sign up. I'll need a working e-mail address and the name of the faction you'd like to represent. The e-mail addresses will be published to the other players to facilitate game scheduling.

You may choose any faction, regardless of which models you will be using to play. Each player will play one game per week, and their reported results will drive the mission choice and the storyline. Each Sunday, I will distribute the week's results and the next week's missions and objectives.

There is no cost to participate in this event, but you may be required to write a short piece of fluff describing your army or commander, so be prepared!

If anyone is interested in helping out with the event, please let me know.

I suppose that would be important to know, wouldn't it?

I'm not putting a points value on the games. As far as scoring goes, scenarios will be generic win/loss with some secondary and tertiary objectives that will affect the story. When you schedule a game, you'll need to work out a points value with your opponent. Realistically this will put the games somewhere between 500pts and ridiculous Apocalypse sizes, but if you agree on some other method of determining objectives you could run Kill Team or alternate force org games too. If you do something really cool, let me know and I might work it into the story.

As far as helping out, the easiest thing would be just being available for multiple games.

It was suggested to me that we might want to set up a website or quick message board for scheduling games and story updates, but my medium of choice has always been dead plants. Anything beyond the absolute basics will require someone else to step in a bit to corral all those theoretical numbers into something cool looking that I can access from the store.

I'd like to see if we could get a 4,000 v 4,000 planetstrike game going at the begining amoungst our group at least. begin and end with a bang. Very Happy

Hey I was hoping to jump in on this too. I've read up on a couple other narrative campaigns and have a couple cents I'd like to throw in.

First would be squad veterancy! If a squad performs task X and survives the battle with (25% or more remaining), then for the next battle a squad of the same type gains ability Y. However, if that squad goes below 25% initial size then the squad losses the "veterans" and in later battles no longer has that ability. If you want I can come up with a list of abilities. A person who does not wish to lose the ability does not have to deploy that squad. A squad may only have 1 ability per battle regardless of who earns it.

Another could be a persistent battle force. At the beginning of the campaign each player makes up an army list of X amount. Then they must figure out what squads from that army list will be used in the upcoming battles. There's a lot more paper work on the players side for this, but it does grant an interesting campaign feel. Watching your tactical marines kicking ass and each squad making a name for itself. Works great with the previously mentioned "veterancy" rules too.

Oh, I remember reading about unit experience. That would be awesome to have persistant units that could gain experience and such. ^^. Kinda like what Tiny-Sandwich said.

Hell, every player could make a number of "unit cards" one for each unit in his army he wants to use in the campaign. Each player would have to build his army based on these cards (he wouldnt have to use all of them every battle, but he would have to to own all the needed models). Then on the back of every card you could list the battles the unit has been in, it's experience, and any abilities it's earned through said experience. Maybe some fluff to go along with it for fun ^^.

Its early and I know I'm rambling. Just an idea.

When I spoke to Steven, he said he wanted to keep this VERY simple because it's been so difficult in the past to get players to follow through. It is what it is right now, because he's trying to build a following of others who would be interested in more advanced campaigns in the future.

I'm also slowly scaling the complexity because I'm looking for the sweet spot on the complexity/coolness scale that will keep people playing without killing me every time I run one.

Yeah, im a crazy guy who likes complexity, haha. But I totally see that and it makes sense. Either way, It'll be good. I'm trying to get my forces in order. Will it be WYSIWYG? If so, I have some work to do, haha.

Games are still played amoungst ourselves without oversight. So basically, it will depend on if your opponents are OK with it, but it's always recommended. Very Happy

Well before we start adding stuff to the campaign. This is supposed to be a narrative correct? What's the premise Steven? You are running this show and what not :P. Are good guys trying to purge a corrupted world? Has a Chaos warband or two joined forces to enslave the inhabitants of an imperial world, as (probably several) Space Marines chapters in the sector come to their rescue? What were you thinking? Smile

It's actually backwards from what you're thinking. Narrative is based on games rather than the other way around. Depends who signs up and how epic matches are. That's why I wanted to start with a big-ass Planetstrike game. Get something good starting the story and something different to do for fun. Smile

Narrative...narrator? Sounds like Warhammer with a DM if you ask me. Shouldnt the games be based on the story?

Well either way I think we'll have some fun. Loialarent, I did picture a DM ran warhammer campaign, but I can see what they mean. I'm looking forward to Sunday guys and the fun we'll have.
