________________________________________________________

Recently, Jeff Lemire has garnered a lot of attention for his writing on several of DC's New 52 titles, like Frankenstein, Agent of Shade, Justice League Dark, and Animal Man. As many already know, Lemire actually built his reputation on titles that were significantly less mainstream critical darlings like Essex County and Sweet Tooth.

Mainstream success has done nothing to exhaust the depth of Lemire's alternative ideas, which is quite fortunate for us, the consumers of great comics.

This last year saw the emergence of Lemire's latest, The Underwater Welder, from Top Shelf Productions.

From the back:
"As an underwater welder on an oilrig off the coast of Nova Scotia, Jack Joseph is used to the immense pressures of deep-sea work. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the pressures of impending fatherhood. As Jack dives deeper and deeper, he seems to pull further and further away from his young wife and their unborn son. Then one night, deep in the icy solitude of the ocean floor, something unexplainable happens. Jack has a mysterious and supernatural encounter that will change the course of his life forever."

As is true of Lemire's previous books, this graphic novel is swimming in positive reviews.

Arrow "Lemire's stylized art and inventive panel structure is the perfect vehicle for this well-told story..." - Publishers Weekly

Arrow "These pages are poignant and masterful and represent some of the very best work he's ever done." - NPR

Arrow "The Underwater Welder is like nothing else you will read this year." - Complex.com

Arrow "I smell awards coming his way." - Bloody Disgusting.com
