Idea

"You need to momentarily break off from whatever's being spoon-fed to you this month by the corporations," says Joe Casey on the Reactions text page at the back of Catalyst Comix #1. Casey makes the case with energy and passion that big-company superhero comics need a wake-up call and he's dedicated to making that happen with Catalyst Comix.

This title is one of several current titles from Dark Horse bringing back characters from the Comics' Greatest World line of superheroes launched by Dark Horse back in the 1990s. That one included characters like Ghost, King Tiger, Rebel, X, Barb Wire, and Motorhead. Currently Dark Horse is publishing revived versions of Ghost and X. The third title to bring back characters from that universe is Catalyst Comix.

As Casey puts it, "Each issue of Catalyst Comix is structured with a main lead feature and two backup stories. Every three issues, the lead feature will shift and one of the previous backups takes the pole position." The lead story to start out is "The Ballad of Frank Wells." Frank Wells is more well known as Titan.

Rather than me telling you about whether or not Casey can back up the big smack-talk, I'll let his words do the talking. The following is the text from the first page of Catalyst Comix #1, followed by a picture from the story and one from one of the back-up stories.

"All of a sudden...the internet cafes and the juice bars and the white noise of the new fall television season were rendered meaningless.

This was the end of the world...and it was everything our collective nightmares promised us it would be! And more!

In a lot of ways...it was rapturous (if you're into that sorta thing). But most of us had fallen hard for the Big Lie and now we were paying for it through our noses...

Luckily someone had the big balls to stand up to total annihilation...and his name was Frank Wells."
