Fiasco is a very interesting twist on role-playing, in fact it is much more of a storytelling game rather than a proper role-playing game. Unlike traditional role-playing games where you actively try to get your character to succeed, in this game, you are simply guiding the pathetic, hapless jerk you are playing into the unfortunate fate they very probably deserve (and having a ball while doing so!).

From the back:
"Fiasco is a game inspired by films like Blood Simple, Fargo, and A Simple Plan. During a session you and your friends will engineer and play out stupid, disastrous situations that exist at the darkly comic intersection of greed, fear, and lust. It's like making your own Coen brothers movie - in about the same amount of time it'd take to watch one."

Fiasco is a game for 3-5 players, intended to take 2-3 hours of gameplay, with no preparation required. You will need 4 dice (D6) per player, 2 of one color and 2 of another.

As noted before, this game is more of a storytelling game rather than a traditional role-playing game. Players can't just kick back and roll a d20 when its their turn to attack. Everybody has to bring their creative, imaginative A game. If that sounds a bit intimidating or perplexing, the game itself provides a framework, with fun, bizarre charts, that will spark the creativity in all of you.

When players sit down to play, the first thing they do is to pick the playset they will be using. The core Fiasco book comes with 4 different playsets complete with all necessary charts. Main Street, Boomtown, Suburbia, and The Ice are the included playsets and lest that sound like a thin selection of scenarios, keep in mind that the choices made by the players in the Setup phase of the game can radically alter how each one is played. I wouldn't dare guess how many times a group could play the same playset while being able to tell wildly different stories each time.

In addition to the playsets included in the book, Bully Pulpit games has a beefy selection of playsets available for download in their playset of the month section. Intriguing titles like The Flyover, London 1593, News Channel Six, Horse Fever, Hollywood Wives, and The Fallout promise hours and hours of darkly comic storytelling fun.

All the dice are rolled and put in the middle of the table. The numbers rolled allow for the options players choose in which to define the relationships, needs, locations, and objects around which their story's plot will revolve. Below are two pictures of games at the end of their Setup phase...

Finally, I MUST recommend that potential Fiasco players check out a game played by Will Wheaton on the Tabletop Youtube series. Their game of Fiasco was played over 3 episodes of the series, with one episode devoted to the Setup, one episode for Act One and the Tilt, and the third episode devoted to Act Two and the Aftermath. Follow the links for a very entertaining example of game play as Will Wheaton, Alison Haislip, John Rogers, and Bonnie Burton play Fiasco: Saturday Night '78.
