PostPosted: Sat Jun 28, 2014 11:18 am    Post subject: Do you LOVE comics or just LIKE-LIKE comics?

A couple of women came into the store the other day and the following conversation took place:

"I'm going to get one of these Grab Bags also."
"Why? You don't know what's in it."
"That's the fun! That's the mystery."

It got me thinking.

How many of us feel that way towards comics anymore?
How many of us could get a mystery grab bag of comics and read them all, enjoying each one, not knowing a thing about them or maybe knowing just enough to be curious?

Yes, I know, the prices of comics stop a lot of us from trying new things, but let's take our Grab Bags for a second. Or even the older comics we have dated 2011 and older that are 50% off the cover price.
How many of could simply grab a comic cheap enough and read it because the cover caught our eye?

Not because you love the writer or the artist or anyone involved, but because you were just curious?
How many of us try something new anymore with something old?

Many comics I go through in our back issue boxes to make the Grab Bags, range from simple kiddie fare to extreme violence and action.
There's also the big range between superhero stuff and simple stories about human nature.
Strangers in Paradise was an amazing book in it's prime, but how many of us would pick it up now for about a dollar, yet rent a movie twice as old at $2.99 because the cover of the DVD got their attention?

Have we really become such a fast society that we don't even have time for a 10 - 20 minute read from something that might have the power to change the way we think or transport us somewhere we've never been before instead of the standard places we've been to, like Marvel's New York or Star Trek's Earth?

It's easy to say you love comics because when we buy only what we love, how can you not?
If I surrounded myself with same thinking people, I never have to worry about thinking differently, never having my brain challenged about anything else

There's people out there that say you aren't a true music lover until you've listened to Indie music from bands who didn't quit make it onto the radio.
Wouldn't the same be true for comics?
Just because a comic isn't printed by DC or Marvel or maybe didn't make it past 4 issues, does that make it bad?
Or did they just run out of money and couldn't afford to make anymore, letting the World miss out on something speculator. (Remember, a lot of the older comics I'm talking about came out way before Kickstarter could save them).
Some of these Indie comics were a person's dreams and aspirations. They truly meant something because back then, it wasn't too easy to get published, much less get distributed to other cities.

We could also talk about comics from the last 5 years or so. The same holds true. How many non-big-publisher comics have you tried lately?

Do you LIKE-LIKE comics or do you love the IDEA of comics so much, you're willing to tryout something that might have been amazing, but just missed it because the newest issue of "same old thing I've been reading for years" came out that week?

So try something different!
Be bold!
Be brave!
Truly go where some men fear to tread!

Get a Grab Bag and read them all!

"That's the fun! That's the mystery."

Listen and read the 1940's adventures of Martin's Raiders

Watch The HANGAR BAY SHOW - It's not the nerd-cast you deserve, it's the one you need!
