**The following contains some spoilers for August comic stories**
September marks an event that has never happened before.
DC Comics will be starting over. I don't mean the movie adaptation of the Burt Reynolds/Jill Clayburgh movie, I mean a REAL starting over.
Like if your girlfriend got amnesia and completely forgot you hit on her sister and wrecked her car after trying to imitate the tractor-chicken scene in Footloose.
The thing is, August is almost as historic.
This month we've seen Booster Gold walk off with slight amnesia, Dick Grayson saying goodbye to his run as Batman, the Justice League shuts down their HQ, Zatanna says goodbye, Power Girl does too and the Green Lantern Corps fly off.
Let's face it. We know we'll see them again. Like Pauly Shore, most of them just keeping popping up and never die. (Oh, one of the best comedians ever, Greg Giraldo dies, but Pauly Shore still makes movies, I mean c'mon! Really! I...sorry
We know they'll be back, but we don't know when.
Death in comics is like a full moon. It doesn't happen every time and we general don't care if its there. Unless, of course, it comes in a black bag, sealed to make you think you're going to make a quick buck on eBay, we general don't care unless we're reading them. Like a close relative.
J. Jonah Jameson's wife. James Gordon's son. Other minor characters have died all year long and only if we're reading the story, do we really care. Like a friends relative you've never met.
Usually we know most will come back. Superman, Batman, Captain America and the Human Torch. (Whoops! I mean, no, no. I'm sure the Human Torch is gone for good.)
This month though, we say goodbye to most of our "friends" we've read for years, seeing the end coming as Doom Patrol and Rebels led the way. Like guys slowly being laid off at your job.
Now the big boys are leaving. The building is being emptied and the only few that are left are just finishing up their work.
Then, next month, the building will start to fill up again. BUT....Remember when you went off to Summer break from school, only to come back and see all your friends again?
Remember how they sometimes seemed a little different?
Different likes? Different stories?
Well get ready for September as DC brings back your favorites, but in different subtle ways.
Batman is a legend that hasn't been proven. Clark is a guy just trying be a hero and the Justice League, well, they've changed also.
So when September comes and DC starts to roll out its new titles, don't look at it as a jumping off point like most.
Look at it as a new beginning. A fresh start.
Think of it as coming back from Summer break and seeing all those old friends and hearing some of those new stories they have.
