Fortifying your position has been a hallmark of some of the greatest games we've ever seen, and Deckbuilders take that approach to a whole new level. These games give you different options to build up to an efficient endgame with synergy galore. Or perhaps you merely build to efficiency. Deckbuilding games tend to have a diverse set of options that allow you to play the same game in many different ways.




There have been many great deckbuilding games over the years, but it's hard to pick just one. We at Merlyns try to keep the best of the best in stock. Dominion is the original deckbuilding game, and was a great proof of concept. Easy to pick up and fun, it still stand as one of the best games. Ascension built on that making a great option with a slightly higher level of complexity and strategy.

The Marvel and DC deckbuilders are both a lot of fun, letting you play a great game while also using the themes and characters you love from your favorite comics. The DC game in particular also adds a co-operative aspect to the game as you attempt to beat the game.

That's not exactly correct.

Ascension does not have a higher level of complexity and strategy compared to Dominion. Quite the opposite, in fact.

While it may be true that the cards and their abilities are more interconnected in Ascension (certain abilities will change if you play other specific types of cards on the same turn), the gameplay of Ascension is a stripped-down version of Dominion. Card-buying is simplified. Scorekeeping is simplified. You may play every card you draw in a turn rather than having to choose what to play. There are only 2 resources to keep track of.

By contrast, in Dominion you have to manage your actions to determine how many cards you can play, your buys to determine how many cards you can buy, and the treasure you use to purchase cards. Play order becomes very important, and you often run out of actions before using all the cards in your hand. You have to plan each turn carefully or else you may play yourself into a corner. And it could all be for naught anyway as other players can attack you directly with card abilities, forcing you to change your strategy on the fly. Attacking other players in Ascension is limited to making them discard held items.

On top of all that, Ascension uses the entire deck of cards with each play, while Dominion chooses 10 different cards (along with the treasure and victory) out of almost 200 options if you have all the expansions. So while one strategy in Ascension will carry you through the game, the gameplay of Dominion changes with each new game as some cards form powerful combos, while others become dead weight without the right support.

I can't speak to how the comic book deckbuilding games play, but Ascension makes for a great beginner's introduction to deckbuilding games. From there, once you have the basic ideas down, it's an easy move up to more complex games like Dominion.
