Superman and Daredevil are fun and don't get me wrong, have had some great stories, but for those who are tired of spandex and capes, but still want some comic in the books, VERTIGO CRIME has come out with some great graphic novels that take the Noir settings to a new level.

NOCHE ROJA:

As is typical of crime noir stories, our "hero" is a cynical outsider with a dirty past and a lousy present. Jack Cohen is an ex-policeman and occasional private eye who sells security systems to McMansion owners, and stays drunk to quiet his nightmares. He's hired by a Mexican social worker to investigate a series of murders of maquiladoras (female factory workers) that are even more brutal than usual. Cohen's trip south of the border is a Conradian journey into the heart of darkness - his own, and the political conspiracies, brutal class structure, powerful drug cartels and sexual perversion he finds there.

RAT CATCHER:
According to underworld legend, the Rat Catcher is a peerless assassin who specializes in silencing mob snitches. There’s just one problem—he doesn’t exist. At least, not according to the U.S. Marshals who oversee the Witness Protection Program….
Now, there’s a pile of dead bodies in a burning safe house outside El Paso. The Rat Catcher has finally slipped up, and a washed up FBI agent has one last chance to hunt him down before he disappears forever. But as the two master manhunters spiral in towards each other in a deadly game of cat and mouse, each of them hides a secret from the other—secrets that could destroy them both.

THE EXECUTOR:
THE EXECUTOR stars a washed-up NHL player who finds himself skating outside the law when he returns to his home town, to find out why his late and long-estranged high-school sweetheart named him the executor of her will.

A SICKNESS IN THE FAMILY:
Meet the Ushers. (By the way, this name is no accident). The parents, Ted and Biddy. Grandma Martha. The three kids, William, Amy and Sam. Just a normal, middle class family gathered around the table on Christmas Day. Until they start dying very violent deaths. One by one. As secrets and resentments boil to the surface, it becomes clear there’s more than one Usher with a motive for killing off the others. But in the end, the truth turns out to be far more shocking than anyone in the ill-fated family could have imagined.

THE BRONX KILL:
Martin Keane is a writer struggling to get his second book together, and is considered a disappointment to his father, who dreamed of his boy getting into the family business and becoming a cop. Martin's wife becomes obsessed with the Bronx Kill, a dirty, grimy place where Martin's grandfather was brutally killed years ago, and then she mysteriously disappears, causing much of the blame to be pointed at Martin. From there, secrets are revealed, as is a fantastic twist that socks you right in the gut.

So come on by and check out these "serious" books that leave the capes and spandex out to dry.
