We here are Merlyn's are each doing our top ten comics right now and mine...are...AWESOME.
#10 Savage Wolverine
Wolverine has gone through hell and back...literally. He has lost his metal, had it put back in, been killed, fought his way back from hell, lost his powers multiple times, and countless other crazy story lines. You might imagine that with everything that has happened to him that it would be hard for writers to come up with anything new to keep you interested. Surprisingly enough that isn't the case and that makes me very happy as old wolvie is one of my favorites. Watching him try to keep his baser killer instincts at bay is still very engaging and the inclusion of filling out more of his historical adventures is quite pleasing to behold.
#9 The Shadow Now
Now first and foremost, this isn't on my list just because I'm in it. Colton's artwork is fantastic and the series may have started off a little rough with David Bliss' transition of the Shadow to modern times but it had established itself well and is a fun and dark read. Their ability to re-imagining one of my childhood favorites makes me very happy.
This comic should really of came with a parental advisory warning. Magneto has always been one of my favorite characters and it's nice that they have brought him back to his greatness. Yes he is weaker than he used to be but he is still a master of one the fundamental forces of the universe. Now that he is back on his righteous path of destruction in making his vision of the world a reality, I couldn't be more excited. I really hope that the rest of the series is as awesome as issue 1.
#7 All New X-Men
If you haven't read any of this you are doing yourself a disservice. Beast breaks all the rules and brings the original X-Men from the past to the present and all hell breaks lose. From Cyclops vs Cyclops to the world waiting for Jean to manifest her powers and freak out, this is an awesome book.
# 6 V for Vendetta
I know that this isn't a new book. I also know that most people have only seen the movie and never read the graphic novel. That in and of it self needs to change. This book is amazing, there is really no other way to say it. The book fills out even more of the events that the movie hints at and you should come in and pick up a copy...thank me later.
#5 Night of the Living Deadpool
First there was Deadpool Kills Marvel. Then Deadpool Killistrated. Then Deadpool Kills Deadpool. Now...we have the glory of Deadpool the zombie killer. This whole series is one awesome scenario of the writers have fun making the merc with the mouth killing anything and everything in the most entertaining and creative ways possible. I get excited whenever a new issue comes out because it's one of the few books that you have no idea what is actually going on and with Deadpool, that is a good thing.
#4 East of West
Jonathan Hickman...for those of you who read his work that is all that really needs to get said. He is a master of actual character development and having a plot and character driven book. His take on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in a futuristic steam-punk western is just awesome. From the stark artwork to the twisted joy that some of the horseman's avatars get from rolling around in piles of bodies this book captivates. Be very afraid of making Death angry with you and looking for vengeance.
Now first off I want to make it clear that I am not going to say a whole lot about what is actually going on in this book as the fan-base, after waiting so long for any new material would murder me. That said, if you didn't know that this series was back, get here and pick up a copy as it is bloody awesome. You know that you want to find out what is going on with the rest of the characters and here is your chance.
#2 New Avengers
Yes another Hickman book and you should know why by now. The Illuminati are faced with the end of every known universe and the Infinity Gauntlet can't even help as it litteraly exploded from the sheer gravity of the destruction they are trying to prevent. What lines would you cross to save your own world...would you destroy countless others? The New Avengers are facing that decision every day...A MUST READ!
What happens when Deadpool has finally had enough and stops being funny due to the sheer amount of anguish, guilt, and rage that he has swirling through his very being? Pure awesome is the result. I love Deadpool as he is one hell of a fun read but this twist into a dark and sorrowful character is so engaging that it is currently my favorite read. Read it...don't think about reading it...read it. When Wolverine and Captain America are worried because Deadpool hasn't made a joke, quip, or even uttered a single word you know that things are happening.
