Remember these classic modules from the days of 1st edition Advanced D&D?




Whether you were around and playing back in those halcyon days or whether you are a newer enthusiast for the world's oldest RPG, these gems ought to whet your appetite. For those lucky enough to own the original versions, congratulations! For the rest of us, though, acquiring copies of these can be an expensive undertaking.

Now, in conjunction with the recent reprinted editions of the core AD&D books, Wizards of the Coast has published two hardcovers, each full of modules from those classic days.




Dungeons of Dread reprints S1: Tomb of Horrors, S2: White Plume Mountain, S3: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, and S4: The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth by Gary Gygax and Lawrence Schick.

Against the Slave Lords reprints the modules pictured at the top of this page - A1: Slave Pits of the Undercity, A2: Secret of the Slavers Stockade, A3: Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords, A4: In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords by David Cook, Harold Johnson, Tom Moldvay, Allen Hammack, and Lawrence Schick.

To further sweeten the deal on the latter book, an all-new adventure, A0: Danger at Darkshelf Quarry, a prequel adventure to the classic modules is also included.

Both of these books reprint not only the content, but also the maps and interior artwork of the original modules. Just as they always were, they are designed for use with 1st edition, AD&D rules, not for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition D&D.

Gamers across the country and across the world collectively, communally cut their role-playing teeth in these great adventures. If you want to take a trip back through time and experience the adventures that defined the game in its early years, look no further.

It is great these were published; I bought the one with the extra adventure; maybe after I get the rest of the generic adventures through AD&D 2nd ed. (including early non-TSR, RPGA) and a few hard to find rules/etc., I will buy the other.

I was also glad to see AD&D 2nd ed. core rulebooks reprinted, though I never liked the second editions of those 2nd ed. rulebooks with larger print text, as if for kids.

WoTC will also be reprinting the second edition of original D&D (OD&D), which is called the first edition, but it was after an edition with JRR Tolkien's material that had to be removed. In literature before the 'net, any change of a book that even corrected grammar was called a new edition, but if we omit that, considering much other, important material was changed, there have been many more editions of D&D than newer players realize.

As far as I know one can run any 1st ed. AD&D module in 2nd ed.--remember, in the later 2nd ed. days, TSR stopped printing '2nd ed.' beside 'AD&D'... so it seems 2nd ed. is an extension of 1st ed. The only significant changes (besides perhaps removing, or at least changing, and adding other stuff that was minor) were to how characters work, but one should still be able to use an AD&D 1st ed. character with 2nd ed. (maybe not vice versa), even if some types changed or were removed; the differences are said to be small enough that one can still play a standard AD&D monk, assassin, or bard, but maybe not older versions of included types that changed. The same is said for OD&D that was published earlier and at the same time--that one can use a regular D&D character in AD&D (as long as it is not a type that has a clear equivalent), and mainly only differences like armour class that are different in the two systems have to be converted... but if one wants an OD&D demihuman in AD&D as a class (or equivalent class variation), it is said to work--just with advantages and disadvantages compared to equivalent AD&D classes (people who wrote articles on this may also consider AD&D an extension of D&D other than rules that must be converted).

As for '2nd ed. D&D', that would be the first version of the very original set, in the 1970s, that had JRR Tolkien's material removed, and the real 3rd and 4th ed. were really soon after that--TSR, as much as I like them, never did a decent job making it clear something was a new edition, but up to AD&D 2nd ed. with the later additions, there were probably 10 or so different editions in which the rules were incompatible, or including the first edition with JRR Tolkien's material. That is not counting what a literature professional would probably consider a different edition, such as versions with different cover or interior art (whether grammar corrections would be any more).
